PROBLEM'S BACKGROUND – MENTALLY ILL PATIENT POPULATION
Scientific and accurate data on incidence of mental illness in Pakistan is not available. Global criteria, as developed by WHO, indicate that 10% of total population worldwide suffers from mental illness.
Using this global criterion, a figure of 1.5 million mentally ill persons is quoted for Karachi.
TREATMENT FACILITIES IN KARACHI
Treatment facilities available in Karachi for mentally ill persons are grossly inadequate.
Karachi has only 80 psychiatrists and 450 beds to treat mentally ill patients.
The city’s facilities for inpatient treatment of acute and sub-acute psychiatric patients are nowhere near the requirement. Karwan-e-Hayat works towards alleviating the problem.
Karachi did not have a centre for care and rehabilitation of mentally ill patients, until Karwan-e-Hayat established its facility at Keamari.
FUNDS REQUIREMENTS FOR 2007-2008
For fiscal 2007-2008, Karwan-e-Hayat’s capital expenditure budget is Rs. 2.1 million.
Together with revenue expenditure estimates, Karwan-e-Hayat needs Rs. 21 million during 2005-2006 to manage the Psychiatric Care & Rehabilitation Centre and the Khayaban-e-Jami OPD.
This level of funds requirement will increase in the years to come due to inflation and extended activities.
